Today

Today, CSA Group provides services to businesses, industries and consumers worldwide. We work in more than 54 areas of technology, including new technologies such as electric vehicles, alternative fuels, nano materials, wind and solar energy and fuel cells. Our mission is as relevant today as it was nearly 100 years ago:  Advancing Today, Anticipating Tomorrow.

CSA Group acquires UK-based mi Technology Group as part of strategic growth plan in automotive testing sector.

2012

CSA aligns all of its divisions under the singular CSA Group brand with a new logo and tagline to better reflect the organization’s presence as a leader in the global marketplace. CSA Standards, OnSPeX and CSA International are all rolled into new brand.

CSA Group acquires Orb Optronix to provide state-of-the-art testing and certification services to LED and lighting manufacturers globally.

2011

CSA Group expands European-based medical device testing capabilities with acquisition of IntraTest GmbH.

2000

2009

CSA acquires UK-based SIRA Test and Certification Limited, SIRA Certification Service, SIRA Environmental and SIRA Consulting Limited.

2004

OnSpeX division is launched focusing on consumer product evaluation services.

2002

US Department of Energy authorizes CSA International for energy efficiency verification testing. CSA opens new office in Mississauga specifically focused on standards development. Headquarters remain at Rexdale location with CSA International testing lab.

CSA Certification and Testing division becomes known as CSA International.

July 1997

CSA acquires International Approval Services, Inc. and becomes an authorizing organization in the US for the American Gas Association’s Blue Star mark and in Canada for the Canadian Gas Associations’s Blue Flame mark for gas fired products.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration accredits CSA as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).

The first fully harmonized Canada/US standard is published for heating and air conditioning systems.

CSA establishes the Quality Management Institute administering Z299 and ISO 9000 quality assurance registration programs. (SDM)

1970

1979

CSA is chosen to administer ISO 9000 Quality Standards on behalf of Canada.

1974

CSA is officially accredited by the newly formed Standards Council of Canada as a Standards writing organization.

1950

CSA officially changes from an “Approvals” office to a “Certification” organization.

1940

1947

CSA becomes a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) based in Geneva.

1946

The CSA Mark is registered for the first time and CSA becomes Canada’s representative international organization for standardization.

1940

Becomes the official certification agency for all electrical equipment intended for sale or installation in Canada.

1933

The Government of Canada decides CESA standards are to be followed in all government contracts.

1927

CESA publishes the first Canadian Electrical Code Part I paving the way for a safer electrical system.

1920

CESA publishes its first standard, Specification for Steel Railway Bridges to assist the expansion of the national rail system and to standardize the replacement of old wooden bridges with modern steel expansions.

Established as the Canadian Engineering Standards Association (CESA) as a volunteer committee in Ottawa under the direction of Sir John Kennedy to develop standards that would help Canada move forward as an industrialized nation and advance the technology of the day.
