Project Manager, Construction and Infrastructure Standards

CSA Group’s project managers play a critical role in managing the development, publication and maintenance of standards that help keep North American’s safe. Project managers are instrumental in bringing together dozens of members who volunteer their time to the standards development process. Prior to joining CSA Group, Sarah Chung worked in various roles that depended on standards, which helped her develop a strong understanding and appreciation of their significance. When a project manager role opened in CSA Group’s standards organization, Sarah leaped at the opportunity to put her experience into action and make an impact.

  1. Describe your CSA Group career journey.

Prior to CSA Group, I worked as a Project Manager at an engineering consulting firm where I was involved in evaluating products to CSA standards. As a firm, we also supported developing and updating standards for several standards development organizations, including CSA Group. In 2017, I joined CSA Group’s Testing, Inspection and Certification business as a certifier. With an interest and background in standards, when an opportunity popped up just over one year later, I moved over to our not-for-profit Standards Development organization as a project manager in the Construction and Infrastructure sector.

  2. What is a typical day at work like for you?

As a project manager, a significant portion of my role involves working closely with our volunteer members. A typical day can consist of facilitating a meeting for members to develop, discuss, and revise content for a standard, preparing and reviewing standard drafts, and supporting members on their various tasks. I also spend a fair amount of time working with our internal staff preparing and publishing standards, managing external inquiries about standards, and exploring new initiatives or potential new areas of work for my sector.

  3. What is the most rewarding aspect of your role at CSA Group?

Without a doubt, it is working with dedicated professionals who are genuinely enthusiastic about what they do. It is inspiring to see members working together. Standards are developed by consensus, so getting alignment is not always easy, but it’s amazing to see our members put aside their personal interests for the greater good. This sentiment is shared by CSA Group’s employees as well. There are so many people and departments that provide support and diligently work in the background to help us create and develop standards and the tools to effectively use them.

  4. If you could describe working at CSA Group in one word, what would it be? Why?

Impactful. But not in an obvious way. Standards are part of our daily lives, but for the most part, they go unnoticed. For example, when you break down everything that goes into building and running a home – from accessibility requirements, the materials used (including sustainability and environmental considerations), the electrical work, plumbing, appliances, and the energy needed to run the home – there are so many areas that standards may have been used to make our homes comfortable, safe and reliable.

  5. Why is CSA Group a great place to work?

CSA Group offers and encourages professional development and growth, based on my career path and goals. It also offers great support and care of its employees which was especially evident during COVID-19. In the face of constant change, the organization adjusted and pivoted as needed and provided support and support tools to help us through it.
And the people – I am part of a great collaborative team that is supportive and enjoys learning from each other. Heading back to the office a few days per week has made me realize how much I missed it.
