Executive Summary

This report compares the mathematical derivation of brake performance limits defined in CSA M424.3, Braking performance — rubber-tired, self-propelled underground mining machines, and selected machine braking standards from other jurisdictions, and develops criteria to model machine stability. In addition, braking limits on a 20% grade (slope) test defined in CSA M424.3 are extrapolated to a test on flat ground. The findings indicate that CSA M424.3 braking limits compare favourably with other global standards, and the test procedure is suitable for transition to a flat ground test, provided machine stability criteria are modelled on a grade.
