The frequency and severity of extreme weather events in Canada are on the rise, and flooding in particular is causing immense physical damage to Canada’s communities and putting Canadians’ safety at risk. Between the 1980s and 2008, catastrophic insurable losses amounted to $200-500 million per year, but since 2009, that number has surpassed $1 billion. Dr. Blair Feltmate, a climate adaptation expert at the University of Waterloo, sat down with Steve Paikin to discuss the effects of climate change and how nationally accepted codes and standards – developed by CSA Group, Standards Council of Canada, the National Research Council, and the Intact Centre on Climate Change – can help build flood resiliency into new and existing communities to help reduce costs, keep communities running, and help keep people safe.
