LG Gas Dryers First to be Certified for 2015 ENERGY STAR® Specification

Paving the way for the first energy efficiency standards for residential clothes dryers taking effect in 2015, LG Electronics is the first home appliance manufacturer to announce ENERGY STAR certified gas dryers.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has qualified six new LG ENERGY STAR gas dryers and eight new LG ENERGY STAR electric dryers, following verification by the independent third-party certification body CSA Group. The ENERGY STAR certified electric dryers include the new LG EcoHybrid™ heat pump models, which earned the EPA’s 2014 ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for their third-party-verified 50 percent improvement in efficiency compared with conventional electric dryers.

All these new LG ENERGY STAR certified clothes dryers, available in the United States beginning this fall, feature LG’s TrueSteam™ and Sensor Dry technologies. The LG Sensor Dry system measures the moisture and humidity levels during the cycle and automatically adjusts the drying time to help conserve energy and assure proper drying time. LG TrueSteam technology minimizes wrinkles with powerful gusts of real steam, more effective than dryers that simply spray mist into the dryer drum.

The EPA’s new ENERGY STAR specification recognizes a selection of highly efficient electric, gas and compact dryers that will use approximately 20 percent less energy than will be required by the U.S. Department of Energy’s new minimum efficiency standards that take effect in 2015.

“Consistent with our long-standing commitment to introducing some of the most energy efficient home appliances on the planet, LG is proud to lead the way in ENERGY STAR certified gas dryers,” said Chris Jung, U.S. president, home appliances, LG Electronics, a 2014 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year.

According to the EPA, if all residential clothes dryers sold in the U.S. meet these new requirements, the utility cost savings will grow to more than $1.5 billion each year and more than 22 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions would be prevented.

“Clothes dryers represent a huge opportunity for consumers to save energy and know that they are helping to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” Jung said. “And just as LG was the first to announce energy efficient heat-pump dryer technology for the U.S. market earlier this year, our conventional ENERGY STAR certified gas and electric dryers will help drive the market for home laundry products that help consumers save energy and money.”

CSA Group President and CEO Ash Sahi applauded LG as the first manufacturer to be verified by CSA to exceed the 2015 dryer standard. “LG is clearly showing consumers a commitment to sustainable products that go well beyond simply meeting minimum energy performance requirements. CSA Group is committed to encouraging a more sustainable world, and we congratulate LG for being a leader in producing energy efficient products that will help achieve this goal.”

LG ENERGY STAR certified gas dryers being introduced this fall are models DLGX3371W, DLGX3371R, DLGX3371V, DLG3171W, DLGX4271W and DLGX4271V. Suggested prices for these gas dryers range from $899 to $1,099.

LG ENERGY STAR certified electric dryers being introduced this fall are models DLEX3370W, DLEX3370R, DLEX3370W, DLE3170W, DLEX4270V and DLEX4270W. Suggested prices for these electric dryers range from $799 to $999.

The new LG ENERGY STAR certified electric EcoHybrid heat pump dryers are models DLHX4072V and DLHX4072W. Suggested prices for LG EcoHybrid dryers, before any incentives from electric utilities, range from $1,599 to $1,699.

Companion LG ENERGY STAR certified front- and top-load washers, including models designated as ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2014, also are available to complete consumer’s upgrades to more energy efficient laundry rooms.

LG’s leadership role in ENERGY STAR products complements the company’s broad array of sustainability initiatives  including energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reductions in manufacturing and the supply chain; consumer education aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of product use; producer responsibility through consumer take back/recycling programs; reduction in the use of hazardous substances; deployment and promotion of renewable energy technologies; and development of innovative green life cycle product designs.
