Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) can fundamentally alter the way people and goods are transported, improving safety, efficiency, and accessibility of transportation. However, CAVs, with their advanced sensing and AI technology supporting any of the five levels of driving autonomy, will require adequate supporting infrastructure, from roads, signals, signage, and lane markings to roadside sensors, communication protocols, GPS, high-definition mapping, cybersecurity, data management, and privacy protection. Maintaining safety of the transportation network while integrating CAVs will be critical for their widespread adoption.

CSA Group codes and standards can play a crucial role in this process, helping support safety and security of all systems and their interoperability within North America.

Through its ongoing initiatives, CSA Group engages with a broad group of stakeholders representing industry, government, and academia to provide guidance and leadership in standards development and research focused on:

• digital infrastructure
• physical infrastructure
• usage, human-machine interface, accessibility, and vehicle aspects
• cybersecurity, data management, and privacy

In collaboration with key stakeholders, CSA Group also developed the CAV Standardization Roadmap. This document provides a clear path for developing codes and standards that will address gaps in the current standardization landscape and evolve as the technology advances.
