With growing energy needs and a commitment to net zero, Canada is exploring innovative clean energy solutions, including small modular reactors (SMRs). SMRs are an emerging class of factory-constructed, portable, and scalable reactor technologies with smaller sizes and electric output than large conventional reactors. SMRs can offer several benefits, such as enhanced safety features, increased flexibility in applications, including off-grid and combined heat and power generation, and lower capital investments.

CSA Group is actively working with sector stakeholders, including government, regulators, utilities, SMR technology vendors, and general interest groups, helping:

• identify and evaluate priority areas for standardization to support the deployment of SMR technologies;
• facilitate the revision and development of standards and guidelines to address the SMRs priority areas; and
• enhance standards-related awareness, engagement, and knowledge transfer to support the growing SMR sector.

Through these activities, CSA Group is contributing to the efforts of Canada’s SMR Action Plan^[4] to “turn the SMR Roadmap into reality.”
