Overview

The Importance of Energy Efficiency Testing & Verification

Whether you are an electric or gas cooktop manufacturer, customers growing awareness centered around energy consumption and environmental impact means you may benefit from testing and certification to validate your energy-consumption claims.

Established by the U.S. DOE, Appendix I1 to Subpart B of Part 430 — Uniform Test Method for Measuring the Energy Consumption of Conventional Cooking Products (the U.S. DOE Uniform Test Method) outlines a standardized procedure for measuring the energy consumption of conventional cooking products, including both electric and gas products. All claims made on energy consumption must be based on data generated by this procedure.

Substantiate Your Cooktops’ Energy-Consumption Claims with CSA Group

Electric Cooktop Manufacturers: Energy-Consumption Claims
CSA Group is accredited by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct testing to the U.S. DOE Uniform Test Method requirements and can help electric cooktop manufacturers obtain applicable ENERGY STAR certification.

Manufacturers can obtain the appropriate ENERGY STAR certification mark to substantiate their energy-consumption or efficiency claims. The ENERGY STAR certification program plays a crucial role in supporting market and regulatory directives aimed at enhancing energy efficiency on a global scale. By providing clear labeling and performance criteria, it helps consumers and businesses make informed choices that contribute to reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Energy Efficiency Standards: The testing procedure outlined in the U.S. DOE Uniform Test Method helps validate that manufacturers accurately measure the energy consumption of their products, which is essential for meeting ENERGY STAR criteria.
  • Qualification for ENERGY STAR Labeling: Manufacturers use the U.S. DOE Uniform Test Method to demonstrate compliance with energy efficiency requirements, making it more efficient to qualify for ENERGY STAR certification.
  • Consumer Confidence: By adhering to the U.S. DOE Uniform Test Method and obtaining an ENERGY STAR label, manufacturers can provide consumers with reliable information about the energy performance of their cooktops, enhancing confidence in their products.

Gas Cooktop Manufacturers: Energy-Consumption Claims
As part of our accreditation to conduct testing to the U.S. DOE Uniform Test Method requirements, CSA Group’s test results and data can be used by gas cooktop manufacturers to substantiate their products’ energy-consumption claims.

While there is currently no ENERGY STAR-equivalent for gas cooking products, any claims of energy consumption or efficiency must still be based on results generated through the U.S. DOE Uniform Test Method. For example, the Code of Federal Regulations states that “upon the compliance date(s) of any energy conservation standard(s) for conventional cooking tops, including the conventional cooking top component of combined cooking products, use of the applicable provisions of this test procedure to demonstrate compliance with the energy conservation standard is required.”
