IEC 62368-1 serves as the primary safety standard applied to Information Technology Equipment (ITE) and Audio-Visual (A/V) products. It officially came into effect on December 20, 2020, supplementing the preceding standards, IEC 60950-1 (applicable to ITE) and IEC 60065 (relevant to A/V), across Canada, the U.S., and Europe. However, the persistence of legacy 60950-1 / 60065 standards in specific markets presents an ongoing challenge for manufacturers in determining the appropriate testing protocols.

Recent Updates to Standard IEC 62368-1

The fourth edition, published on May 26, 2023, has introduced important updates and clarifications. However, the European version has encountered acceptance challenges, prompting deliberations regarding its compliance.

The third edition of IEC 62368-1, which encompasses innovations like wireless charging, insulated liquids, outdoor equipment, and batteries, has been officially adopted in both the U.S. and Canada. Enforcement of this edition is scheduled to commence on July 6, 2024, exclusively for new products. It is important to note that existing products, provided they undergo no major changes, are permitted to continue adhering to any of the previous editions, including legacy standards.

Currently, the requirements for IEC 62368-1 continue to undergo refinement, and nations around the globe are in the process of transitioning to the fourth edition of this standard.
