Overview

Keep up with functional safety evaluation for embedded electronics and software technologies with CSA Group's proven line of services.

As new technologies, including embedded electronics and software, continue to enhance a wide range of home and commercial products, functional safety becomes increasingly important to help protect consumers from potential risks related to product failures. Compliance with electrical safety standards only won’t provide freedom from all unacceptable hazards. This danger has led to the incorporation of evaluating functional safety as an additional requirement in several electrical safety standards for home and commercial products, such as:

  • IEC/CSA/ UL 60730-1
  • IEC/CSA/UL 60335-1
  • CSA C22.2 No 0.8
  • UL 1998 or UL 991

Implementation of these requirements must be carefully and wholly integrated throughout the entire product development lifecycle.

At CSA Group, we test components, equipment, and software compliance with many safety analysis requirements. This analysis allows us to cover multiple standard requirements, including:

  • Preliminary design review and gap analysis
  • Design verification for fault analysis
  • Failure Mode Effect and Analysis (FMEA) assessment
  • Assessment of supporting Functional Safety Management

Functional safety helps you confirm the safe operation of systems or components even when they malfunction. It is an evaluation of the overall safety of a system or piece of equipment that depends on automatic protection operating correctly in response to its inputs or failure in a predictable manner. Functional safety requirements minimize risks resulting from dangerous failures caused by systematic and random faults.
